§ How to critique, select and adapt materials from a variety of published and authentic sources.
§ The fundamentals of the English language through the eyes of a language learner.
§ The psychological processes involved in learning a foreign language and the effects on language acquisition of different types of motivation and learning style.
§ One’s own strengths and weaknesses and the importance of ongoing self-reflection in the role of teacher, colleague and employee.
STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE:
The timetable of a full time course is from 09:00 to 17:30 from Monday to Friday. Teaching practice (TP) occupies 2 hours 45 minutes everyday from Monday to Thursday and the rest of the day is dedicated to feedback, input sessions and lesson preparation. Fridays consist of input sessions. The part time course takes place on 3 days per week for four hours. For exact times please contact the centre directly.
In addition to these hours, candidates are expected to prepare lessons, complete written assignments and observe experienced teachers at the school. It is not possible to have other work commitments during a full time CELTA course.
Teaching practice is an important part of assessment. Trainees will teach for a total of 6 hours over the course, divided into lessons of 25 – 60 minutes in length. Students are mostly Spanish and trainees will teach students with two distinct levels of language ability. The students are aware that you are a teacher in training. Each lesson receives detailed verbal and written feedback from tutors, outlining what worked well and things that could be improved. The lessons are also discussed orally with fellow trainees and the course tutors.
Input sessions are very practical and related directly to teaching practice. They cover the main issues of language analysis and teaching methodology and techniques. They are highly interactive and the focus is very much “demonstrate” rather than “explain”.
